WebCharles Healey. Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein that binds to the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. Binding these hormones help control their release from the body’s tissues into the bloodstream. SHBG also transports other substances in the blood such as cholesterol, triglycerides, and thyroid hormones. WebPrevious studies have identified no consistent change in sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels during normal menstrual cycles. This is despite marked cyclical changes in plasma oestradiol concentration, and the observation that SHBG level increases in pregnancy, and after administration of exogenous gonadotrophin or synthetic oestrogens.
