WebAFAIK the only things that Blender uses GPU for are the display/UI and GPU rendering. late response, but yes you can run fluid sims, cloth sims and smoke/fire sims on your gpu and they do run significantly faster. A software for gpu smoke/fire sims is Embergen and a software for litteraly every other sim is houdini.
